US Airways Cutting Pittsburgh-Florida Flights; AirTran Adds Service

FINDLAY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Starting in January, US Airways will end all non-stop flights from Pittsburgh International Airport to Florida.US Airways said passengers will need to connect to flights to Florida in Philadelphia or Charlotte. The airline said it can also work with passengers to re-book them on another airline.A few hours after the US Airways news broke, AirTran Airways said it would add nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to three Florida cities -- Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers -- starting in October.
Before Sept. 11, 2001, US Airways operated more than 600 flights out of Pittsburgh. Now, that number is down to 58 flights.
