Big New US Airways Center Coming To Pittsburgh AirportPOSTED: 11:41 am EDT September 20,
2007 MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Ground was broken Thursday morning on US Airways' new $25 million operations control center at Pittsburgh International Airport.US Airways chose the Pittsburgh region over Phoenix and Charlotte, N.C., as the site for the 60,000-square-foot center.About 600 people will work at the facility, which will be the center of operations for US Airways' 1,400 daily mainline flights when construction is finished in 2009.The current US Airways operation center in Phoenix will close when the new center is built."We will be moving all of those employees and combining those into a single center, moving that here to Pittsburgh, for a total of 600 employees initially," US Airways President Scott Kirby said. "We built the facility with room to grow as US Airways expands over the coming years."Though the company may expand, Kirby said it's possible that some more Pittsburgh flights could be cut. He did not say when that decision might be made.Gov. Ed Rendell and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato also attended the groundbreaking."These are high-end jobs with a brand new state-of-the-art building," said Onorato. "All of US Airways planes will be run out of this facility for North America.""A great victory for Pittsburgh," Rendell said. "A great victory for Pittsburgh Airport. Remember, we were in hot competition with Phoenix and Charlotte. Most people in media and even in my office thought we were going to lose."The state and county offered $16 million in grants, tax credits and loans to build the center.
