Action News Extra: Look 10 Years Younger

The following report by Channel 4 Action News reporter Wendy Bell first aired on Channel 4 Action News at 5 p.m. on Feb. 27, 2006.

Can you really do something on your lunch break to make you look younger?

More and more women and men are turning to quick skin pick-me-ups than ever before.

So what procedures deliver, and at what cost?

Channel 4 Action News narrows the field to four treatments.

RESTYLENE

When Paulette Spiller saw her wrinkles in a picture, she said that was it.

"I had very deep, very deep wrinkles," Spiller said.

A smoker for 35 years, Spiller had deep wrinkles in her lips and around her eyes.

Aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Leo McCafferty suggested restylene -- a less expensive, longer-lasting skin plumper than collagen.

"Dr. McCafferty softens these lines here. He injects it in my lips. He'll put it in my lower lip to balance me out and then these lines. These creases here, he fills in for me," Spiller said describing her face.

Restylene's effects last about six months -- longer than collagen.

It isn't permanent, there's virtually no down time, very little no risk and immediate results.

McCafferty massages the restylene into place.

"She's going to leave here and go back to her normal routine. She may have a little bit of bruising, but it's easy to cover with makeup," McCafferty said.

Paulette also has deep folds on the sides of her mouth. Restylene plumps them up.

"We have injected this side. This side is relatively flat compared to this side," McCafferty said.

Total down time for Spiller? About eight minutes.

Price tag? $550.

BOTOX

Gerard Antoszewski gets Botox injections to lift his sagging eyebrows and lids.

"It was to the point that it was starting where I thought it was starting to interfere with my vision," Antoszewski said.

McCafferty injects Antoszewski's forehead with Botox -- a botulinum toxin that relaxes muscles.

Botox erases fine lines and wrinkles, and in Antoszewski's case, one syringe will lift his eyebrows and lids out of his field of vision.

Total time for the treatment? Three minutes.

Cost? $600.

And results could last 3 to 6 months.

"It was a relief just to know that I could get up in the morning and not have to worry about my vision," Antoszewski said.

PHENOL PEEL

Debbie Delmaster is turning 50 this year -- by no means old, but she doesn't look as young as she feels.

"I have circles, some lines under my eyes. Little crow's feet.," Delmaster said.

McCafferty suggests a small dose of Botox and a phenol peel to smooth the wrinkles under Delmaster's eyes.

Phenol is carbolic acid that, when mixed with other ingredients, resurfaces the skin -- knocks out fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage.

There's no pain, and it's applied in just a few minutes.

Delmaster won't see results for six to eight weeks, but the effects are permanent.

Cost? $1,500.

Bell: "So, you say this hurts, right?"

Delmaster: "Yes."

Bell: "Great."

THERMAGE

Heard about thermage?

It's all about this machine. A zap of energy heats deep tissue and stimulates new collagen growth.

"You have minimal jowling and minimal skin laxity and I think you would benefit from thermage," plastic surgeon Dr. Siamak Agha said.

Saga said thermage can tighten the jowls and neck, especially in men and women just starting to see a loss of elasticity.

I'm curious, so I'm going to be the guinea pig.

Molly Wagner -- the medical aesthetician -- put a grid on my face that would soon get some 600 electric zaps.

The tip of the device is cool, and with each touch and each beep, it sends a shot of energy into the skin, heating an area of collagen, stimulating new growth and promoting plumping.

The skin turns a bit red temporarily, but it feels tighter, smoother.

The whole process takes 60 to 90 minutes and the effects could take 6 to 8 weeks to see, as the collagen regenerates.

But the skin's tightening can last as long as five years.

It's pricey -- $1,000 to $3,500.

I'll tell you, it hurts near the eyes and lips, but I looked fabulous -- frightening, yeah, but ready to go back to work.

And I did -- none of my co-workers the wiser.

I can report that my skin does in fact feel tighter after going through the thermage treatment.
