The dream of a new home is still sinking in for the Slaughter Family.

Channel 4 Action News anchor Michelle Wright sat down with the Penn Hills family for their first interview since “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” stopped by to give them a brand new home last month.

The family of seven was chosen because of their involvement in the community. Frank Slaughter turned his life around, and now works at the jail to help others do the same.

“I just couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t believe it. It was happening. Yes!” said Tracy Slaughter.

The family met Ty Pennington and the other stars of the show, and then went to Walt Disney World while their old, unsafe home was demolished. Volunteers then rebuilt the home from the ground up.

“I just thank God for everybody. It was a miracle manifest, it was a prayer answered,” said Frank Slaughter.

Those designer stars actually worked hard, too.

“I am right on target. It’s the morning of day three so I’ve got a few days,” said John Littlefield during the home’s construction.

Paul DiMaio went to college in Pittsburgh and found himself craving a Primanti sandwich.

“I did a few Nutcrackers here at Point Park College. Hey everyone at Point Park, good to see you guys,” he said during a break.

DiMaio and crew worked around the clock to make the deadline. Some volunteers even took vacation days at work.

“You get to do something, you get to help people out,” said Jim Austin.

“I was surprised to see half the people I seen. I was like, oh my God,” said Tracy.

As things started to take shape, there was a new home, and a new beginning.

“I love it, I think it’s amazing,” said 10-year-old Michael Slaughter.

The big day arrived, and the crew worked right up until the last second to give the five Slaughter children their own space after years of sleeping in the same room.

“At first I really wanted my brother and sisters with me. But it’s grown on me, so now, I’m like, everybody out!” said 16-year-old Tayana Slaughter.

On the morning of the big day, the bus pulled up to hide the house. People came with signs and support, and waited for hours to welcome the family home.

Then, the order came to “move that bus!” But Hollywood needed just the right angle, so they had to say it a few more times before the Slaughters finally saw their new home.

“It’s been a tough time a little bit, trying to find everything, and starting out something fresh. I was so used to the old ways. Now I had to start a new way. It’s been tough but I’m getting used to it,” said Tracy.

The episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” that features the Slaughter family will air in January.
