2009 Saturn Vue Green Line 2-Mode Hybrid

Quick Facts:
  • Electric motors alone power SUV at low speeds.
  • Gasoline engine provides power at higher speeds.
  • Electric motors can provide extra power when needed at higher speeds.
  • Saturn will be first brand to offer two hybrid options in one model.

Saturn is introducing its second Vue hybrid for 2009, which also happens to have one of the longest names of any vehicle for 2009.

The Saturn Vue Green Line 2-Mode Hybrid uses General Motors' new 2-mode hybrid power system that allows the vehicle to operate solely on electric power at low speeds, and then seamlessly switches over to gasoline engine power at higher speeds. The electric motors will kick-in at the higher speeds if conditions demand it.

Helping to power the car is the regenerative braking system. Regenerative brakes turn the forward momentum of the SUV into electricity, which slows the Vue and helps recharge the batteries.

The 2-Mode Hybrid is expected to get a 50-percent boost in fuel economy over the non-hybrid V-6 Vue, and is expected to go more than 500 miles on a tank of gas.

When production of the 2-Mode Hybrid begins in late 2008, Saturn will become the first brand to offer two hybrid options on the same model. Saturn already sells the Vue Green Line, which uses a more conventional gasoline/electric hybrid configuration.
